The Grup d’Estudis d’Història Econòmica (GEHE) is a research group that is known for its solid foundation and competitiveness. It was established approximately thirty years ago when young professors and exceptional students collaborated to form a cohesive team. The group initiated several productive research lines, including the recovery of industrial heritage, analysis of economic flows, industrial development, technological progress in agrarian-manufacturing economies, agrarian changes, emergence of mass tourism, and microeconomics with a specific focus on business and labour. This platform summarizes the group’s essential milestones in its evolution, which encompasses macroeconomics, microeconomics, and political economy. All of these disciplines have a deep chronological perspective, considering Economic History as an essential tool that extends beyond factual aspects, strictly descriptive, and encompasses the understanding of the economic growth process. This potential is also transferable to the teaching sphere.

The GEHE has been maintained for many years through competitive research projects, particularly due to the dedication and complicity of its members, who have changed over this extended period. Presently, the core of the group consists of five researchers, in addition to other colleagues from the Applied Economics field, and has close collaborations with European and Spanish universities. The group’s members have opened up new research lines, emphasizing changes in growth models and their ecological and environmental externalities, deep sectorial analysis using the Balearic Islands as a central laboratory, and the historical macroeconomic trends of the most advanced economies, mainly the United States and Europe.

All the aforementioned is being crystallized in publications and projects, which are referenced in the curriculum vitae of each researcher and the summary of the group’s output. The outcomes have materialized in top-level publications, indexed in JCR and SJR, in the fields of Economic History and Applied Economics. Additionally, the National Agency for the Evaluation of Quality and Accreditation (ANECA) has certified the efforts to apply these findings to the teaching domain and to disseminate knowledge beyond the university, through collaborations with public and private entities, via media articles or advisory services.
